Ricky Lavina - This Miami Tech Startup Just ”Uber-ized” Tax Filing | Ep. 43
Monday Oct 14, 2019
Monday Oct 14, 2019
Taxfyle, a Miami-based tech startup heralded as the "Uber" of the tax accounting industry, is the latest example of how the Sunshine State's tax incentives and today's gig economy benefit South Florida residents, businesses and workers alike. In this episode, Taxfyle CEO and co-founder Richard Lavina explains why these tax benefits are helping South Florida attract, grow and nurture more and more companies like his. We also talked about how Taxfyle works and how users can spend less time worrying about taxes and more time enjoying life.
During the conversation we talked about:
The tax benefits of living in Florida?
The benefits of starting a company in Florida, specifically South Florida?
Is Miami a good place for raising funds as a startup and ultimately a cheaper place to utilize those funds?
What is Taxfyle? And how did it become the "Uber of Taxes?"
About Richard Lavina: CEO & Co-Founder - TAXFYLE
Upon graduating from the University of Miami in 2009, Ricky went on to work at a local CPA firm in Coral Gables before being hired as an auditor at PwC. While working at PwC, he obtained his Master of Accounting from FIU and was struck by the inspiration to start Taxfyle. Since then, Ricky has taken Taxfyle from a simple thought to a venture-backed startup that has one of the Big Four accounting firms as a client. TAXFYLE, is one of the most downloaded tax apps on the Apple store every year. It's often described as the "Uber of Taxes" as they have 1300 licensed CPA's available through their app available at any moment to do your taxes. But they also do so much more. They are the secret weapon of some of the largest accounting firms in the country that want to shed their old school ways and be more modern for our tech centric world. Those companies use TAXFYLE, their app, their network, and their ideas to change the pace and output of their organization. Taxfyle has gone from a small idea, to a now 40 person full time staff based in Coral Gables, FL. Founded by two Miami natives, Taxfyle is shaping the future of work by retooling the world’s multibillion-dollar professional services industry, changing how services are delivered and who they are performed by. You can learn more at taxfyle.com. CEO Richard Lavina is literally leading the charge of the future of work. A task that used to take months and cost thousands ("taxes") can literally be done in hours and cost hundreds. It's why TAXFYLE is one of the most talked about Tax apps/companies in the country.

Jeff Ransdell - Miami’s Tech Sector is Booming | Ep. 33
Tuesday Jul 16, 2019
Tuesday Jul 16, 2019
Jeff Ransdell, venture capitalist and founder of Rokk3rFuel VC, explains why more and more entrepreneurs are coming to South Florida to build their companies. From electric scooters and facial detection software to the “Uber” of the CPA service, he sheds light on Miami-based startups with global scalability that are poised make waves in the Magic City's blossoming idea-to-exit ecosystem.
About Jeff:
Jeff Ransdell is a venture capitalist building a portfolio of exponential technology companies at Wynwood Arts District-based venture capital firm Rokk3r Fuel ExO, which he founded in 2017 following a departure from the world of private wealth management. Jeff approaches venture capital with a signature “founder focused, investor driven” mindset, shaped by two decades as a top executive of Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
As a managing director and market executive of the financial powerhouse, he managed more than $130 billion of global private client investment assets, a P&L of $2 billion, and over 2,000 employees across the bank’s Southeast Wealth Management Division. His transition to venture capital was motivated by what he saw as mounting evidence that opportunities to shape the economy and capitalize on innovation were steadily shifting from the public markets to the private markets.
In the face of much skepticism, Jeff chose Miami, Florida, as the home base for Rokk3r Fuel, armed with an unparalleled rolodex and emboldened to leverage the city’s untapped resources and advantages. Today, Rokk3r Fuel manages a $200 million fund and has a portfolio of almost a dozen companies, such as HYP3R, AdMobilize, Taxfyle, and Eyrus.
Jeff is regularly called upon to share his insights on the global economy with outlets such as the CNBC, CBS and American City Business Journals.

JC Caceres - Why China & Asia Are Increasingly Eyeing Miami Real Estate | Ep. 32
Wednesday Jun 19, 2019
Wednesday Jun 19, 2019
Miami has clearly evolved into a thriving financial center, global gateway, hub for world class arts and culture, destination for education and healthcare, tourism juggernaut, and wellspring of prime waterfront residential real estate ... and yet, until recently, the city’s relationship with the Asian market has been limited. The reasons for this include regional unfamiliarity with Miami, lingering misconceptions of the “Miami Vice” era and the absence of direct flights from South Florida to East Asia.
However, key factors indicate the dawn of a sweeping Asian-influenced era in South Florida. How did we arrive here? And more important, what does it mean for South Florida and Miami’s economic growth? J.C. Caceres, President of the Asian Real Estate Association of America's Greater Miami Chapter, joins us on the podcast to explain.
About JC Caceres:
For over 24 years, I have been passionate about South Florida real estate. During my extensive career, I have seen Miami and surrounding areas evolve from vacation destinations to full-fledged international capitals of business, finance, the arts, and culture. Along the way, I have also established one of South Florida’s strongest real estate networks.
“Having purchased homes in this market myself, I am always thinking of ways to help buyers successfully take advantage of the ever-growing popularity and value available in South Florida. I believe it’s my ability to see the situation through my clients’ eyes that has helped me create so many customers for life.
Before embarking on his real estate career, I spent over 13 years in management at United Parcel Service. There, I worked throughout different centers in the region and had great opportunities to get to know and work with many wonderful people and business owners. As well, I also successfully ran a restaurant's business in Miami for several years. It was during these positions that I perfected my talent for listening to others’ objectives and presenting effective and efficient solutions – skills that I continue to use today with my real estate clientele. “I enjoy bringing people together in situations that can benefit everyone involved. When I represent a client, I make the extra effort to completely and fully analyze their needs. This allows me to not only meet their expectations and protect their best interests, but also identify the best-possible properties that may exist through the right kinds of connections.
Originally from Bogota, Colombia, I been living in South Florida for a long-time where I am a resident and in the Miami area. My current focus is on residential properties throughout Miami-Dade and Broward and Orlando counties with a concentration on “great opportunities and deals that offer the best return, value, or match for each individual client.”
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in International Business and Global Management from Florida International University (FIU) and is a member of the Realtor Association of Miami, the Florida Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. Whenever possible, I make it a point of supporting the local community through various non-profit organizations as well as local PTA’s for his children’s schools.

In 2011, Alicia assumed the charge of Managing Partner for Cervera Real Estate, wherein she led the expansion of the company’s General Real Estate Division. This, together with her ability to exclusively represent a vast number of developer projects, has substantially contributed to the growth of the firm. Alicia continues to lead by example, servicing developer client needs while also assisting associates with individual and bulk transactions.
